What drives the price

The anode rod is a long metal stick that screws into the top of the tank and corrodes on purpose, so the steel tank doesn't. When it's used up, the tank starts rusting instead. Replacing it is a small job that gets bigger for a few reasons.

Arizona factors

Hard water is why this page exists. The rod sacrifices itself faster in mineral heavy water, and ours is heavy. Chandler averages 16.5 grains per gallon with a range of 5 to 20. Mesa runs 12 to 22 depending on the plant. Gilbert is the soft end of the East Valley at 8 to 10, and that's still hard water. A. O. Smith calls hard water the biggest threat to a water heater's lifespan, and Rheem lists it first among the things that shorten a tank's life.

The manual's replacement interval was written for average water. Here, the rod on a five year old tank can already be a bare wire. The sediment that builds up at the same time buries the bottom of the tank, and the burner has to cook through it. Flushing and checking the rod together is the maintenance that moves a tank from the short end of Rheem's 8 to 12 years toward the long end.

What Yellowstone charges

Our repair and maintenance line ran $421 to $1,235 for the middle half of customers across 20 jobs in the last 12 months, and that covers everything from a flush to a gas valve. An anode swap on its own is at the small end of what that line includes, but we'd rather give you the actual number on the phone than have you read a range that's mostly other jobs.

Worth it, or too late?

Worth it when the tank is under eight years old, has never had the rod checked, and isn't leaking. That's most East Valley tanks. Not worth it when the tank is past ten years, when the hot water already runs rusty, or when there's any moisture around the base. At that point the rod has been gone a while and the tank has been doing the corroding. Rheem puts a tank's life at 8 to 12 years and says the risk of sudden failure climbs after year ten. A new rod in a rusting tank buys you very little. Put that money toward the replacement and choose when it happens.
